Character:
Deity Name: Demeter
Pantheon: Greek
Current Alias: Chloe
Apparent Age: Late thirties - Early forties
Occupation: In the Past: Florist / Garden Supplier - In the Present:
Agricultural Engineer

Personality: It was said that Demeter was the most generous of the great Olympian goddesses. The Greek goddess was beloved for her service to mankind in giving them the gift of the harvest and the reward for cultivation of the soil. She was greatly involved on a day-to-day basis in the lives of the common folk, unlike most of her goddess counterparts. Mortals are attracted to her warmth, understanding and kindness, coming to her side like a child in need of a warm embrace. During the months Persephone is at her side, Demeter is cheery and always smiling. This, of course, does not always mask the pain she feels for what Hades did to her daughter... she tries not to show it.

Demeter is happiest with her daughter and does everything in her power to make Persephone feel comfortable. The elder goddess knows that her daughter will never be the same after the ordeal she went through in the Underworld... but she feels that it is her duty to always show the kindness and love her daughter so desperately deserves.

Yet, during the months when her daughter 'disappears', Demeter seems to die a little each day... the seasons changing with her ever deepening sadness. Soon, winter takes hold and it takes quite at toll on the goddess who looks withered like a dying plant during this few months of death. There are some days where she seems to move rather sluggishly and is void of the warmth and zeal she once had as she worked. Then there are other days where she simply sits in her room, in the darkness where she her grief strikes her the most. This cycle of grief and happiness repeats over and over... but she never complains. As long as Persephone comes back... it is enough for her.

Even with her kind demeanor, Demeter is still a goddess and has ever right to be angry where she sees fit. Her anger is mostly geared towards Hades and Zeus, for obvious reasons.

History: Demeter is linked to the story of Persephone's abduction by Hades, Lord of the Underworld. Her daughter was gathering flowers in a meadow one day when a huge crack opened up in the earth and Hades emerged from the Underworld. He seized Persephone and carried her off in his chariot, back down to his realm below. Hearing Persephone's screams, the goddess Demeter rushes to the meadow, but cannot find Persephone. Carrying a torch, Demeter traveled the world day and night, never eating or resting, searching futilely for her daughter.

During her travels, Demeter still retained some of her warmth as a mother when her bouts of depression were at it's lowest. An example of this would be when she met an old and poor man who was gathering firewood who invited her to eat supper with his family and to rest from her journey. When she told him that she was searching for her daughter, he wished her success and told her that he understood her suffering since his son lay dying at home. Demeter, with the hidden kindness in her heart, changed her mind and went with the kindly man. Entering his humble home, Demeter went straight away to the boy's bedside and kissed the boy lovingly on the cheek. Immediately the pallor left his face and his breathing eased, as goddess's love had restored the son to full health.

Later on, Demeter learned the shocking news that Zeus himself had sanctioned the marriage, giving Hades permission to abduct Persephone. Understandably, the goddess felt betrayed. Renouncing her divine duties that included bringing fertility to the land, Demeter left Mount Olympus swearing that the earth would remain barren until her daughter was returned to her. Because of her distress and the earth becoming barren, she caused the people to suffer and starve which would have deprived the gods of sacrifice and worship. Finally, Zeus could not put up with the dying earth and forced Hades to return Persephone by sending Hermes to retrieve her.

Happily, Demeter resumed her divine duties and restored the fertility of the earth. Each year the goddess Demeter longs for her absent daughter and withdraws her favors from the earth for a period we know as winter, but Persephone returns each spring to end her desolation.

Many years had come to past and her worshipers had made their move to the Americas and so did Demeter with her daughter in tow. They also kept stayed in agreement for when Persephone would stay with her then leave to the Underworld, much to the old world goddess's dismay. Regardless, during the time her daughter was gone, she would stay in the same exact place should her daughter ever come back to earlier then expect... of course, that never happened. During her absence, Demeter would try to continue living a normal mortal life, always keep her name Chloe with a different surname every couple of years.

Sample Post:
The first day of spring was exactly three months from now... Demeter always counted down the days until her daughter would return to her side, safe and sound. On most days, during the winter months, counting the days would the only thing the withering mother would do... one more day, one more day, one more day....

But today was different as she shifted her eyes towards the frost-covered window, powered by the snow that had fallen the night before. She could hear the sounds the children playing outside on the street, their little hands cold from all the snowballs they formed to pelt against each other in a mock fight. With her black shawl over her shoulder, Demeter tightened her arms around her body as she slowly made her way to the door of her little garden shop that was closed during the winter months.

One of the little girls making snow angels lifted her head to see the beautiful woman lean against the door frame and held up her hand to wave. “Ms. Greene! It’s good to see you!” the little girl yelled, smiling at the tired woman. Demeter couldn’t help it... a very small smile appeared as she raised her hand in greeting as well. I am not entirely dead... but close enough, she thought somberly.
